Crocheted and Braided Rugs DIY

When I first wrote this post, I thought maybe someone would be interested in the pamphlet on these crocheted rag rugs. I also found out it is out of print. But I also found out that you can still purchase it on Amazon. Click HERE and you will be redirected to the Amazon site for purchase.

This is more of a tutorial on these beautiful rag rugs.  When I first started my research on rag rugs I was pleasantly surprised how easy these rugs are. There are many ways to make rag rugs and this post will show a few of the techniques. I watched a few videos on making rag rugs and became totally enthralled with them. I have a bunch of fabric that I don't know what to do with, but I think now I will attempt to make a pretty rag rug. You might be interested in making one too.

The above pamphlet is an oldie but goodie. It is one I saved from oh so many years ago thinking that someday I would make one which I did. They are fun to make.

How To Get Your Supplies Together...
As I was researching for this post, I found this website, Grit.com. Her tutorial on getting your fabric ready for making the rag rug is great. I found her explanations on everything were simple to understand and made the whole process easier.
From cutting strips to getting the strips ready to use, her instructions are great. After the fabric is prepared, then it's time to attach the strips and make your fabric balls.
Once the balls of fabric are ready, then it's time for braiding or crocheting and actually starting the process of making the rag rug. You can check out her website Grit.com by clicking on her logo below.
Rag Rugs by Erin...
So after checking out Grit.com, I came across another series of videos on making rag rugs. This video is from Erin Halvorsen. It shows the lost art of rag rugs. I don't know if you've ever purchased a rag rug at a craft show or even tried buying them online, but they are very expensive. These days people don't have time to do things that were done everyday years ago. But a hobby is always a great way to relax. Erin's technique is very easy. If interested stop by and see her website, "The Brooklyn Refineryand "Rag Rugs by Erin"... Below are her four videos on how to make rag rugs. Well worth the watch!

Rags to Rugs...
My next stop was to a website called "Rags to Rugs". What a great website. Who ever designed it gets kudos from me. Very streamlined and easy to navigate. She also had a video on making sure that the transition from one color round to another color round is not noticeable. Her technique is easy and makes all that work on a rug look professional. The video is right after her beautiful rug samples below. If you have time, check out her website. She has many categories including: Fabric, Twine Weaving, Jute Rugs, Beginner Kits and The Bargain Bin. If interested, just click on her logo below and you will be redirected to her website...
Here are a few of her beautiful rag rugs. So many colors and so beautiful. Makes you want to make one as soon as you can...
For those of you that would like to see how Lora transitions from one color row to another color row, here is her video on making that transition...

Once again I suggest everyone check out these videos on rag rugs. They piqued my interest and I thought I would share them with people that might be interested also...

Cleaning Wipes...
Tired of paying for those cleaning wipes for your kitchen? They can get pretty expensive. "It's a Wonderful Life" Blogspot has a great idea. Check out her website for details on this very practical and inexpensive way to have those handy wipes always there ready to be used.

Items needed:
  1. An empty coffee container
  2. Pinesol or Mr. Clean or any other cleaner that you use
  3. 1 paper towel roll (preferably something like Brawny)
Cut the paper toweling in half. This isn't the easiest, but if you use a good serrated knife, it will be a lot easier. Mix 1/2-3/4 cup of your favorite cleaning solution with 2 1/2 cups of water. Pour solution over the paper towels in a empty coffee container. Don't remove the cardboard cylinder in the paper towels. Let set for a few hours. Pull out cardboard cylinder and viola' you have handy wipes for your kitchen. Cover with coffee container top and store under your sink. That's it! What a great idea...Thank you "It's a Wonderful Life" Blogspot.
*Note: you can also use any tupperware or plastic container with a cover. It's totally up to you.
